Redbarn Pet Products Expands Voluntary Recall of Dog Chews

Redbarn Pet Products, LLC of Long Beach, CA is expanding their voluntary recall initially issued on February 9th. The voluntary recall expanded to include all lots of product manufactured with raw material from a single supplier because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The recall is limited to products distributed March 2017 through February 2018. This supplier’s raw material was used to produce the Redbarn, Chewy Louie, Dentley’s and Good Lovin’ brand products listed below with best-buy dates ending in BC. In total, 24 SKUs are affected. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products, and there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. No illnesses, injuries or complaints have been reported to date.

Redbarn initiated a voluntary recall of a single lot of product in early February after being notified that a sample collected at retail by the Colorado Department of Agriculture tested positive for Salmonella. Redbarn is expanding this voluntary recall to include all products manufactured from the raw material supplier of the first recalled product. We came to this decision after being notified that the FDA tested a different lot of raw material from this supplier at Redbarn and it tested positive for Salmonella.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide in pet specialty and grocery retail stores. Affected products are listed below and have best by dates ending in BC. You can use the illustration below as a guide.

Voluntary Recall FAQs

What Should a Customer Do?

Consumers are encouraged to check the lot code to see if their product was affected. Pet owners who have this product matching this lot code in their homes are urged to discontinue use of the product. Consumers who purchased any of the recalled products with the affected lot code are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

What Are Some of the Side Effects of Salmonella?

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If a pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact a veterinarian.

How Did This Happen?

We test every product lot before it leaves our manufacturing plant. Redbarn employs an extensive Quality Assurance team, over 10 people, that run over 400 safety tests on their products every week. Products are tested multiple times, for bacteria like Salmonella, coliforms, and enteros. A product is declared safe to ship only after it tests negatively for these bacteria and other pathogens. Per our standards and procedures, these products were tested both at our Redbarn lab and by a third-party testing facility. Those tests were negative for salmonella or pathogens. We also work hard to limit cross-contamination. Between production lots, we do complete wash downs of the equipment and plant to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. This is part of our comprehensive sanitation program. Despite not being able to replicate these test results or receiving any negative reports from customers regarding Salmonella, we’re still expanding the voluntary recall to keep our four-legged and two-legged customers safe.

What are We Doing to Prevent Another Recall?

First, we made the decision to immediately discontinue our relationship with this raw material supplier. While they underwent our stringent supplier approval process, which includes multiple plant visits, to become an approved supplier, we severed this relationship to protect our customers. Second, we are working with a third-party auditor to review our supplier approval process and identify areas for improvement. Finally, we are working with microbiology consultants to review our current procedures and update processes to better protect against the development of Salmonella in the future.

At Redbarn, quality comes first.

I have 3 bully sticks that I have purchased in that time frame. How do I get a refund and will you send me a shipping label to send it back to be tested? They are the 36 inch sticks.
        Thanks Kelley

Thank you for taking an abundance of caution in this event! Doing this recall before there is a case of a sick pet makes me more assured in your products. I can see that if there is a risk your products are not safe, you are taking the appropriate steps to ensure your customers are notified and the product off the shelf. Thank you for taking my pet’s safety seriously!

      Hi Kelle,

Currently, we are only recalling one lot of product and are working in conjunction with the FDA to verify that no other products are affected. This lot accounts for less than 1/10th of a percent of all the bully sticks we sell.We did some math and this recall accounts for less than 0.0007 of all the bully sticks we sell in a fiscal year.

Please feel free to reach out directly if you have any more questions!

This process happens from the moment we get the raw product and every stage thereafter. No product leaves our facility in Great Bend, Kansas until we are 100% sure the product is safe.

I know you were specific about the affected product in the article and I apologize if this has gotten monotonous to answer, I’d just like to be sure. My dog’s favorite are the bully rings sold loose in the bins, am I correct in thinking those aren’t affected? The pet store hasn’t pulled them, I would just like to make absolutely sure. He’s a small dog and doesn’t have much body fat if he got sick. Thank you!

    1. Darion Barlow

I bought these bully sticks on Chew.com had my dog eat one and she got sick with a stomach ache and diarrhea. I threw the rest out because I was unsure what caused it and since I hadn’t changed anything else. I think the recall report that no dogs got sick is very false. Very disappointed.

    1. Darion Barlow

      Hi Deborah,

We have not had any illnesses, injuries or complaints reported to date from Salmonella. However, it is so important to us that we understand your specific situation. Please reach out to us at 1-800-775-3849 Monday-Friday 8am-5pm PST. We are here for you and your pets.

  15. Susan Robinson

Just received an email about an expanded recall, didn’t receive the first. My dog (a 5 year old male pug) was vomiting on and off over the course of 8 nights, starting the night of February 17, 2018, until I figured out that it was the bully stick that was making him ill. (He chews one for a few minutes before going to sleep each night.) I just checked the package of the Bully’s sticks received in my recent Chewy.com order and see a sell by date of 120720ABC. My dog seems ok now, however still a bit lethargic. I may want to take him to the vet to get a clean bill of health. How do I go about being refunded? Also, why wouldn’t notifications be sent sooner? And why only by email? Chewy.com (where I purchased these from) has the phone number of customers and records of what has been sold to each. Had the notification been received sooner, my dog may not have had to get sick multiple times.

    1. Darion Barlow

      Hi Susan,

We are sincerely sorry to hear about this distressing experience. We did everything in our power to get the voluntary recall notice out as soon as possible.Chewy.com was notified within hours of us finding out. We will reach out to them to understand why you weren’t notified sooner. As mentioned in the post above, for a full refund return the affected product to the place of purchase. Please reach out to us directly at 1-800-775-3849 Monday-Friday 8am-5pm PST or by email at info@redbarninc for any other questions you may have. We hope pet is doing much better now.

  16. nanette phillis

so are you telling me I have to pay to ship these back to chewy and take a financial loss because of this recall????chewy states they won’t return or pay for shipping, so I’m just out the cost of 6 packs of 6-7inch bully sticks???that is a significant loss.

    1. Darion Barlow

      Hi Nanette,

so I have a couple of (opened) 6-packs of your 7 inch Bully Sticks. The UPC # is 8518420716. This seems to match your expanded recall list. The problem is that there is NO expiration date on the package. I am inclined not to use these. I bought at least one of these from Amazon, and possibly the other one from PetSmart. Can you tell me what you suggest.

    1. Darion Barlow

      Hi Michael,

Thanks for reaching out! The UPC # 8518420716 is not listed as part of products affected by our voluntary recall. Thank you for being so proactive in recalling products that may put our pets at risk. I have several 6pak 7″ bully sticks with exp codes ending ABC, AEP and AFF.
I understand the 1st is included but wanted to confirm the others are ok. Also, do I return recalled product to you and is there a credit available?

Best Regards and thanks again for contacting us.

Okay my second time to post this let’s see if it gets posted. Disappointed in Redbarn and the pet store I purchased dog treats from. I’ll say just because it is not on the list doesn’t mean anything your product got my dogs sick and one of them was so sick I thought he was going to die! Curly bully sticks not wrapped and bully sticks singles not wrapped got my dogs sick. Pet store owner wouldn’t do anything about it because it is not on the list! I can’t believe it!!! And I emailed Redbarn three days ago with no response from them!

I am uncertain how you can be definite on any recall as to what products are affected because things come in to factor such as cross-contamination amongst other things. I purchased from chewy on December 20th an assortment of bully Sticks and treats included were four of Red Barnes Barky bark dog treats and on February6 all four of my dogs were seen by the vet4 stomach upset vomiting and diarrhea. This was costly how am I to know Red Barn is not responsible? Do I need to log what treat is given on what day and save all the packaging so I’ll have the correct documentation of of lot numbers Etc. Very upset very very upset

      Hi PD Carter,

Thanks for reaching out to us. We are sincerely sorry to hear about your upsetting experience. It does not sound like the products your pets consumed were affected by our recall because they are a completely different product, made at a different time, from completely different bully stick supplier. Cross-contamination, amongst other things, is unlikely because we test every product at every stage of the cooking process from the moment it arrives at our facility. Redbarn employs an extensive Quality Assurance team, over 10 people, that run over 400 safety tests on their products every week. A product is declared safe to ship only after it tests negatively for these bacteria and other pathogens.

It is still important to us that we help you understand what may have caused your pet to get sick.If you haven’t already, please reach out to our friendly customer service team.If you felt like any our products were the source of your pets getting sick it is extremely important that you let us know ASAP, so we can better assist you and launch an investigation. Please reach out to us directly at 1-800-775-3849 Monday-Friday 8am-5pm PST or by email at info@redbarninc.com. We will need as much information as you have including lot numbers.

  24. Archie’s Mom

Hi, I just received the recall notice yesterday from jet.com and the ones I purchased are part of the recall. Thankfully, I had not given them to my puppy yet. He loves these bully sticks, is there a different product that you recommend in the meantime until these are available again (7 inch 3-pack sourced from Uruguay). Thank you!

    1. Darion Barlow

      Hi Archie’s Mom,

Hope you and Archie are doing well! If Archie loves bully sticks I would recommend one of or different shaped Bully Sticks including Bully Braids or Bully Rings which have not been affected by the voluntary recall. The affected products were all straight bully sticks with best-buy dates ending in BC. If you are not comfortable feeding Bully Sticks at the moment try our Redbarn Fetchers which are just as palatable and durable as our plain Bully Sticks. Check out some other great options here.
