Yes, there is a long list of foods that we humans can safely eat but can be toxic to our pets.

You are absolutely correct that chocolate is toxic for dogs. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine which can both cause severe problems, and even death, if consumed in large enough quantities. Dark chocolate, and especially baker’s chocolate, contains higher concentrations of these chemicals. These are especially dangerous.

Surprisingly, grapes and raisins are on this list. It is not well understood why they can be so toxic, but a small amount of grapes or raisins can cause rapid kidney failure in some individual dogs that seem to have a hypersensitivity to them.

Onions and garlic are another common food that can be deadly to dogs. They contain chemicals that cause damage to red blood cells leading to anemia and possibly death. These chemicals are present in all forms of these foods but are typically more concentrated in dried forms.

Xylitol, an artificial sweetener found in many modern gums, candies and drinks can also be very toxic to pets causing vomiting, diarrhea and even liver failure. It is best to avoid candies in pets all together as the sugar and caffeine contained in them can have the same effects that they have in people only magnified in dogs. They can lead to obesity, diabetes and heart failure if given regularly.

Avocado, alcohol and macadamia nuts are a few other notable items on the list as well. Alcohol has similar effects on pets as it does humans only more severe and avocado and macadamia nuts can be very toxic to dogs even in small quantities.
This is not a complete list of common toxic foods. It is important to remember that often small amounts of many toxic foods may not be harmful, but the more a pet eats of them the more likely they are to have a bad reaction.

If you have any questions about your pet consuming a possible toxin we always recommended that you contact your veterinarian and discuss it with them. Better safe than sorry.

It depends on both the dog and the bone involved. Here are some guidelines: Always avoid small fragile bones, such as chicken bones, as they can easily splinter and become lodged within the animal’s digestive tract. Larger bones from larger animals can absolutely be acceptable. They can provide hours of entertainment for pets! (Pets should always be supervised when chewing on bones or other treats.)

Always consider the chewing habits of your particular dog in this decision as well. If your dog is a very aggressive chewer and has a habit of breaking off large pieces of bone and eating them, then it is probably best not to feed him bones.

Good question. The simple answer: Yes. There are both commercially available vegetarian diets for pets, as well as home recipes that you can use to create your own vegetarian diets. However, This is a highly debated subject among animal nutrition experts. Cats and dogs are both natural carnivores (i.e. wild felines and canines are predators and thus meat eaters.) As such, their digestive tracts are designed to process vegetable proteins less efficiently than they digest animal proteins.

There are a growing number of professionals who believe we should push our pet foods more toward higher meat content foods and less processed formulas with lower amounts of vegetable ingredients.

You can put your cat on a vegetarian diet and she may live a fairly normal life, however, since your cat is a natural carnivore, it may not be as long and healthy of a life as it would be if she were on an animal protein based diet.

20 years of experience in a can!
Drool worthy dog food, purr-worthy cat food!

WHY REDBARN PREMIUM GRAIN FREE CANNED FOOD?
Because it more closely mimics their ancestral diet. It’s loaded with nutrient-rich, thoughtfully chosen domestic ingredients like tasty chunks of lean meat, natural beef pizzle for unparalleled flavor, diced vegetables as a source of natural vitamins, all in an irresistible savory gravy. And best yet? It’s grain free to lessen the risk of food allergies!

High Quality Proteins

No Fillers

No Grain, No Gluten

No Artificial Flavors, colors or preservatives

Simply Natural!

WHY DO WE USE REDBARN BULLY STICKS IN OUR RECIPES?
Redbarn Bully Sticks are a natural source of high quality protein that are 100% digestible and extremely palatable. They are our “not-so-secret” secret ingredient and their addition lends a unique layer of flavor that few pets can resist!

WHY GRAIN-FREE?
When was the last time you saw a dog or cat grazing in a wheat field? Mother nature evolved dogs and cats as carnivores as evidenced by the structure of their teeth, jaws and digestive system. We believe they deserve to enjoy what they would choose to eat if they could choose for themselves-varied natural animal proteins. Not carbohydrates and grains which are the basis of many conventional dog and cat foods.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Fresh Meat or Poultry is our 1st Ingredient- Not grain or by-products (That just speaks for itself!). These high quality, nutritious proteins are complete sources of all the essential amino acids required by dogs and cats.

Grain Free = Less Risk of Food Allergies. Most dog and cat foods contain large amounts of wheat, corn and soy which are common causes of food allergies.

Simply Natural (With added vitamins and minerals). We add these vitamins because they are not commonly found in nature yet are vital to the health and wellbeing of your pet.

Made with Real Redbarn Bully Sticks.

Fresh Vegetables and Fruit – Excellent sources of carbohydrates, fiber and vitamins.

No By-products or Artificial Preservatives.

Complete and Balanced Nutrition.

POTATO STARCH:
Used to bind the chunks together and is also a source of digestible carbohydrates. It is also a source of digestible protein.

CALCIUM CARBONATE:
Source of calcium. Calcium is needed for strong bones. (The calcium in your bones is constantly being resorbed and re-deposited during a lifetime.) Calcium is also essential in many body functions; Vascular contraction, vasodilatation, nerve transmission, intracellular signaling and hormonal secretion.

CARROTS:
Source of beta carotene, fiber, antioxidants and Vitamin A.

BROCCOLI:
Source of vitamin C and Fiber. Also contains diindoylmethane to improve immune response.

CRANBERRIES:
Source of Vitamin c, antioxidants, fiber and manganese.

GUAR GUM:
A natural thickening agent for the gravy so it isn’t “watery”. It comes from the guar bean.

DICALCIUM PHOSPHATE:
Source of calcium and Phosphorus.

This means that your body (or a Dog or Cats body) cannot make them, they have to come from the diet. They are needed to; maintain Heart health, Lower LDL Cholesterol, help normal brain function and reduce inflammation. The ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 Fatty acids is important. A normal diet has plenty of Omega 6, so it is important to have enough Omega 3 to balance the Omega 6 level.
